Setting up your Audience Group

When setting up Data Management Platform (DMP) audience targeting, there are several scenarios where you would want to target (or block) a combination of different DMP audience groups. Previously, this required a complicated setup of Budgets and Ads to effectively manage DMP audience targeting. In order to make combining DMP audiences easier, we created Audience Groups.

Audience Groups allow you to create unique audiences by combining different DMP audiences and set criteria on how different DMP audiences work in conjunction with each other. From the Campaigns tab, select Audience Groups. To create a new Audience Group, click Create Audience Group on the right.

When creating a new Audience Group, start by selecting a DMP from the Data Source list. Next, select DMP audience segments to add to your Audience Group. As you select audiences, you will see them added to the Audience Group selections on the right. You can then add additional segments to new containers to change how the audience segments interact with each other. To learn how these work together, visit the Building Audience Logic section of this doc.

Building Audience Logic

Beyond simply combining audience segments, Audience Groups allows you to choose how Audience Groups are defined from the other selected audience segments using Boolean Logic. As you select audience segments, you can choose whether you want to include users that are in both audiences or one or the other by selecting between the “OR/AND” and “AND/OR” selectors.

OR/AND:

  • Within Containers: users have to be in each audience segment within the container. For example, if you have AUDIENCE SEGMENT 1 and AUDIENCE SEGMENT 2 in the same container separated by AND operators, the container will only target users that are in both AUDIENCE SEGMENT 1 and AUDIENCE SEGMENT 2

  • Between Containers: users can be either from Container 1 or Container 2. For example, if you have one audience pool in Container 1 and have created a different audience pool in Container 2, the Audience Group will target users that are either from Container 1 or Container 2.

AND/OR:

  • Within Containers: users can be any of the audience segments within the container. For example, if you have AUDIENCE SEGMENT 1 and AUDIENCE SEGMENT 2 in the same container separated by OR operators, the container will only target users that are in either AUDIENCE SEGMENT 1 or AUDIENCE SEGMENT 2

  • Between Containers: users must be from Container 1 or Container 2. For example, if you have one audience pool in Container 1 and have created a different audience pool in Container 2, the Audience Group will only target users that exist in the criteria within Container 1 and Container 2

You can also select to Include or Exclude all of the segments within the container.

Targeting Audience Groups

After you have built your Audience Group logic, you can also set whether this Audience Group is available to all advertisers by selecting Global Audience Group or only available to a specific advertiser by selecting Advertiser Specific Audience Group.

After you save your Audience Group, you can select your Audience Group from the targeting section of your Budget or Ad. On the Targeting tab, select Audiences. From the Data Source drop-down menu, select Audience Groups. From here, you can select your Audience Group for targeting.
